Our History

Nehru Memorial College (First Grade), Sullia, Dakshina Kannada, sponsored by the Academy of Liberal Education (Regd) Sullia was started in 1976 under the able and dynamic leadership of its Founder President, Kurunji Venkatramana Gowda with an aim to provide General Education to the rural masses. It is a co-educational institution and offers undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce, Science, Social Work, Business Management and Post-Graduation in Social Work (MSW) and Commerce (M.Com)

The College is permanently affiliated to Mangalore University and the rules and regulations of the University are strictly followed. The College is recognized by the UGC and is included under the Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act of 1956.

The College has an excellent library which has a good collection of books on all curricular and referred subjects. The laboratories of Computer, Botany, Zoology, Physics and Chemistry are well equipped and have state of the art facilities. The College has qualified and dedicated members of faculty who take keen interest in the academic achievements of the students. The college practices a learner centered approach to teaching / learning. As an affiliated institution of Mangalore University, we are following the curricula prescribed by the University. The College has followed Credit Based Semester System (CBSS) for UG programs up to 2018-19 and Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) for UG programs from 2019-20 to 2022-23. National Education Policy (NEP) is introduced from the academic year 2021-22 for UG programs. From 2024-25 SEP is introduced to UG programmes.

The College building has been completely renovated with an additional space of 11,586 sq. mts.in 2012. Special attention is given to maintain high academic standard by working out strategies and using innovative methods of teaching. As part of this the college has introduced several add on courses for the betterment of the students.

The College is assessed and accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Bangalore during 2004-05 with B++ Grade (80 to 85% Score). And undergone reaccreditation of II cycle in 2012 with A grade with CGPA 3.06 and in the III cycle of reaccreditation the college acquired ‘B+’ Grade with CGPA 2.60 under New Methodology. In the 4th cycle of accreditation the college secured B++ grade with CGPA 2.92. It continues to maintain its academic standard through Internal Quality Assurance Cell established in the College.
